Description
Native to New Zealand, the Forest Cabbage Tree is widely distributed throughout the North Island and the northern half of the South Island. It reaches up to 1000 m (3300 ft.) in montane forests. A rather shrubby species, it produces branching trunks to about 4 m (13 ft.) tall, each topped by a crown of straplike leaves. The flowers are highly fragrant and are produced in great profusion. Seeds need to be stratified, i.e. kept in moist sand in the refrigerator for six weeks before sowing.
